How to Practice Shopify for Free — Shopify Partner Account Complete Guide

Learn how to create a free Shopify Partner account, build unlimited development stores, and practice Shopify professionally without paying a single dollar.

How to Practice Shopify for Free — Shopify Partner Account Complete Guide

The Problem: Shopify Costs Money to Practice

One of the biggest frustrations for anyone learning Shopify is the cost. A Basic Shopify subscription costs $39/month — and if you're just learning, that's money down the drain. Many beginners give up before they even start because they think they need to pay to practice.

The good news? There is a completely free and official way to practice Shopify — the Shopify Partner Program. With a Partner account, you can create unlimited development stores, build themes, test apps, and learn everything about Shopify without paying a single cent.

This is exactly how professional Shopify developers work. I use Partner accounts every single day.

What is the Shopify Partner Program?

The Shopify Partner Program is Shopify's official program for developers, designers, marketers, and agencies who build things on Shopify. It's completely free to join and gives you access to:

  • Unlimited development stores — full Shopify stores you can use indefinitely for free
  • Shopify Partner Dashboard — manage all your client stores from one place
  • Revenue sharing — earn a commission when you refer clients to Shopify
  • Early access — test new Shopify features before they launch publicly
  • Free Shopify Academy courses — official training materials
  • Partner community — connect with thousands of Shopify developers worldwide

Step 1 — Create Your Shopify Partner Account

  1. Go to partners.shopify.com
  2. Click "Join now" — it's completely free
  3. Fill in your details:
    • Your name and email address
    • Your country (select your correct country)
    • What you do: select "I build Shopify stores for clients" or "I'm learning Shopify development"
  4. Verify your email address
  5. Complete your Partner profile

That's it — your Partner account is now active. No credit card required.

Step 2 — Create a Development Store

A development store is a full Shopify store that you can use for free, forever, as long as it stays in development mode (no live sales). Here's how to create one:

  1. In your Partner Dashboard, click "Stores" in the left sidebar
  2. Click "Add store"
  3. Select "Development store"
  4. Fill in the details:
    • Store name (e.g., "my-practice-store")
    • Store URL (yourname.myshopify.com)
    • Login credentials
  5. Click "Save"

Your development store is now created. You can create as many as you need — there's no limit. I have over 20 development stores for different practice projects.

What Can You Do with a Development Store?

A development store has access to every single Shopify feature including:

  • All theme editor features
  • Product management, collections, inventory
  • All Shopify apps (most apps offer free trials on dev stores)
  • Shipping and tax settings
  • Customer accounts
  • Discount codes and gift cards
  • Analytics and reports
  • Liquid theme development
  • Shopify CLI integration

The only limitation: you cannot accept real payments or go live with a development store. To go live, the store owner needs to subscribe to a Shopify plan — but that's their cost, not yours.

Step 3 — What to Practice First

Now that you have your development store, here is a structured practice plan for beginners:

Week 1 — Learn the Admin

  • Add 10 products with proper titles, descriptions, images, and prices
  • Create 3 collections (manual and automated)
  • Set up shipping zones and rates
  • Explore the Analytics dashboard

Week 2 — Theme Customization

  • Install the Dawn theme and customize it completely
  • Change colors, fonts, and layout
  • Build a homepage with at least 6 sections
  • Create a custom page (About, Contact)
  • Set up navigation menus

Week 3 — Apps & Integrations

  • Install Judge.me and set up review request emails
  • Set up Shopify Email with a welcome sequence
  • Install and configure Tidio live chat
  • Connect Google Analytics 4

Week 4 — Liquid Basics

  • Open a theme file in the code editor
  • Edit a section's Liquid template
  • Create a custom section from scratch
  • Add metafields to products

Step 4 — Use Shopify CLI for Professional Development

Once you're comfortable with the admin, install Shopify CLI to develop themes locally on your computer:

npm install -g @shopify/cli @shopify/theme

# Connect to your development store
shopify theme dev --store=yourstore.myshopify.com

# Push theme changes to store
shopify theme push

Local development gives you a faster workflow, version control with Git, and the ability to work with proper code editors like VS Code.

Step 5 — When to Get a Paid Subscription

You should upgrade to a paid Shopify plan only when:

  • You have a real product to sell and are ready to launch
  • A client is ready to go live with their store
  • You need to test real payment processing
  • You want to run actual marketing campaigns

Until then, keep practicing on your development store. There is no rush. Professional Shopify developers spend months practicing before taking on paid clients.

Step 6 — Earn While You Learn

As a Shopify Partner, you can start earning money even before you're an expert:

  • Referral commissions: Refer merchants to Shopify and earn recurring revenue
  • Store setup services: Help small businesses set up basic Shopify stores
  • Theme customization: Offer basic customization services on Fiverr or Upwork
  • Content creation: Teach what you learn (like this blog!)

Shopify Partner Resources to Bookmark

  • Shopify Dev Docs: shopify.dev — the complete developer documentation
  • Shopify Academy: academy.shopify.com — free official courses
  • Shopify Community Forums: community.shopify.com
  • Shopify Changelog: changelog.shopify.com — new features and updates

Conclusion

There is absolutely no reason to pay to learn Shopify. The Partner Program gives you everything you need — unlimited stores, full features, and official learning resources — all for free. Sign up today, create your first development store, and start building.
